First XI Match Report

10th May 2022

It’s safe to say it wasn’t a day for the batsman at Condover on Saturday!

After again winning the toss and deciding to bowl, we started well thanks to some tidy new ball bowling from Robbie Barker and Will Davis. We picked up 2 key wickets early in the visitors innings whilst also keeping the run rate down. Some great fielding and a tricky pitch meant that we bowled Wheaton Aston out for 117 after 37 overs. Robbie with 1, Will with 2, Sam Rogers with 1, Zoe Griffiths and Rowan Cresswell both taking 3 each.
In reply, the visitors were excellent with the ball which made things even harder on a rapidly deteriorating pitch. Charlie Rogers and Mark Griffiths battled for a near 50 run partnership before the captain was superbly caught and bowled for 28. A traditional Condover collapse ensued as the old guard of Griffer and the officially now retired Mike Rogers dug in. The pair, who closely resemble the old men from The Muppets, blunted the Aston attack before Griffer was bowled for a hard earned 18. Joll followed not long after for 15 in his final innings. With Will and Sam at the crease we still had the chance to win it late. This was until Will was caught one handed at mid off. Sam and Zoe managed to keep out the last couple of overs meaning we had to settle for a losing draw scoring 100-9.
A strange game but very competitive with some excellent bowling from both sides. Wheaton Aston certainly look one of the best sides in the league, good luck to them until our next encounter!
We are away at table topping Broseley next week.
